Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
